How to Add a Local SIM Card and Top Up Your Credit in Vanuatu

Staying connected while traveling is essential, and getting a local SIM card in Vanuatu can be a convenient and cost-effective way to ensure you have reliable mobile service during your stay. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you add a local SIM card to your phone and manage your credit while exploring this beautiful island paradise.

There are choices available to you:

  1. Online Airalo (https://airalo.tp.st/bofdZtjq) or

  2. Yesim (https://yesim.tp.st/Gql6upPV) and top up as you go

If you are after a local SIM card this is the best option as it can be quite time consuming to get one in Vanuatu as there is a process to get it to work! Also please note that shops don't sell SIM cards, only top up credit so you either have to purchase whilst you are at the airport, or from a Vodaphone or Digicel shop.

You can either purchase a local SIM card at the airport or if you are a guest at Nakatumble we have them on hand for easy purchase and we can help get your phone up and running - but remember we have complimentary WI-FI at Nakatumble for our guests so you can stay in touch via Whatsapp and Messenger to name a few without needing a SIM card.

Providers: The main mobile network providers in Vanuatu include Vodafone Vanuatu and Digicel. Both offer a range of prepaid SIM card options. You can visit https://vodafone.com.vu/ or https://www.digicelpacific.com/mobile/vu to learn more.

Instructions on activating your SIM Card:

Preparing Your Phone:

  • Unlocking: Ensure your phone is unlocked and compatible with Vanuatu’s GSM network. If it’s locked to a specific carrier, you may need to unlock it before using a local SIM card.

  • Power Off: Turn off your phone before removing the existing SIM card.

Inserting the SIM Card:

  • Locate SIM Slot: Find the SIM card slot on your phone. This is usually located on the side or under the back cover, depending on your device model.

  • Remove Existing SIM: Carefully remove your current SIM card from the slot and store safely!

  • Insert New SIM: Place the Vanuatu SIM card into the slot. Ensure it’s inserted correctly, aligning it with the slot’s orientation.

  • Power On: Turn your phone back on. It should automatically detect the new SIM card and connect to the local network.

Activate Your SIM Card

Follow Instructions:

  • Activation: Some SIM cards may require activation. Follow the instructions provided with the SIM card, which may include dialing a specific number or sending an SMS.

Add Credit to Your SIM Card

Top-Up Locations:

  • Retail Stores: Credit can be added at various retail shops, convenience stores, and mobile network provider outlets in Port Vila and other towns.

  • Supermarkets: Many supermarkets also offer top-up services for mobile credit.

Top-Up Methods:

  • Physical Vouchers: Purchase a top-up voucher, which will have a code that you can enter on your phone. Scratch off the code and follow the instructions on the voucher to add credit.

  • Electronic Top-Up: Some providers offer electronic top-up options where you can add credit through their website or mobile app. Check with your provider for online top-up options.

Check Your Balance

  • Balance Check: Use the provided USSD code (usually something like *123#) to check your remaining balance and data usage. This code may vary by provider, so check with your network provider for the correct number.

Customer Service

  • Support: If you encounter any issues or need assistance, visit a local mobile network provider store or call their customer service number. Staff at these locations can help with any problems you may have.
