You’ve arrived - YAY!
As you step off the plane, you’ll experience the charming “old-fashioned” staircase to get off the plane. If you need assistance, the crew is ready to help. Don’t forget to double-check that you have all your belongings before heading inside!
The first thing you’ll see is the sign for Bauerfield International Airport, also known as Port Vila International Airport. It’s a lovely welcoming point for your Vanuatu adventure!
After being guided along the tarmac, you will enter the entrance to customs and immigration. Just a heads-up: no cameras are allowed in this area, so keep your devices tucked away. Also be aware that it is a small confined space, and you may stand outside of the terminal if more than one plane has arrived at a similar time, as there are a limited number of immigration booths to process the arrivals. Pack a hat in your hand luggage and a portable fan can be a bonus!
Once you’ve cleared immigration, it’s time to retrieve your luggage. There’s only one carousel, so keep an eye out for your bags as they come around. After collecting your luggage, you’ll find duty-free shopping and currency exchange services available. If the lines are long, don’t worry—there’s another duty-free shop located on the other side of security!
Next, you’ll move through the baggage checking area, where cameras are also not permitted. For details on what you can and cannot bring into Vanuatu, visit Vanuatu Travel Information.
After clearing all security checks, you’ll find car hire services, transfer options, and additional currency exchange facilities right there in the airport.
If you’re heading to Nakatumble as a guest, we recommend choosing Atmosphere for your stay.

Bonus Tips for Arriving at Port Vila Airport
Travel Insurance: Before your trip, purchase travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind and coverage for unexpected situations.
Local Currency: While credit cards are accepted in main hotels, it’s a good idea to have some local currency (Vanuatu Vatu) on hand for small purchases, or places that don’t accept cards. This can be done after baggage claim and before going through customs. Or you can visit Goodies in Port Vila town too. TOP TIP: Use the ATM at the airport, after the baggage claim or outside where the transportation is (it is an ANZ ATM), and you can take out up to 44,000 VATU, which is enough to keep you going, and not have too much cash to carry around. The fee is approximately 500 VATU, and you can do this through the self service of the ATM. If you are a guest staying at Nakatumble you won't need to have any VATU on hand as we can manage your stay via credit card and co-ordinate your bookings on your behalf to minimise the need for cash.
Customs Declaration: Be prepared to fill out a customs declaration form upon arrival. Familiarise yourself with the rules regarding items you can bring into the country, such as food, alcohol, and other goods, restricted items and items you cannot bring into Vanuatu. TOP TIP: You can bring in packaged foods and snacks, especially for those with gluten and dairy allergies as there can be limited options on the island, but the important step is to declare it! We also recommend that you bring any formula, diapers, baby and children snack-food as the options are limited and it may just be easier to bring them with you.
Mobile Connectivity: If you plan to use your phone while in Vanuatu, check with your provider about international roaming options. You might also consider purchasing a local SIM card at the airport for better rates. You can view one of our recent article on mobile sim cards in Vanuatu here: https://www.nakatumble.com/post/how-to-add-a-local-sim-card-and-top-up-your-credit-in-vanuatu
Transportation Options: Airport transfers are restricted to a few providers - pre-arranging a transfer can save you time and give you peace of mind on holiday.
Stay Hydrated: The tropical climate can be warm and humid. Drink plenty of water upon arrival to stay hydrated, especially if you’ve travelled a long distance. TOP TIP: If you do book with Atmosphere Tours and transfers a complimentary bottle of water is included.
Cultural Etiquette: Familiarise yourself with local customs and etiquette. Vanuatu has a rich cultural heritage, and a little knowledge can go a long way in making a good impression. TOP TIP: You can read this article on what to pack, and remember to not walk around in a bikini or shirtless.
Pack Light: If you plan to explore the islands, packing light will make your travel easier. Some accommodations offer laundry services, if you are staying at Nakatumble this is complementary and done daily, so you won’t need to bring too many clothes!
Explore Duty-Free: Take advantage of duty-free shopping, you can purchase duty free alcohol as you depart baggage claims area - Just remember to check the allowances for what you can take back home. You can also see further information on how many litres or cigarettes you can bring in -

Relax and Enjoy: Finally, take a moment to soak in your surroundings. The airport may be small, but it’s the gateway to a beautiful tropical paradise. Enjoy the warm welcome and the beginning of your adventure!
Enjoy your time in beautiful Vanuatu!
